2010: The Year of The Female Rapper

Looking Back On Year In Hip Hop

We haven’t really been graced with a female rapper hitting the big time in the mainstream hip-hop world since the days that MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Da Brat and Missy Elliot ruled the roost… but apparently the rap queens... or should I say princesses... are re-gaining their clout.

If you haven't heard of one Miss Nicki Minaj, then you've definitely been living under a rock. While Nicki Minaj is being used almost as much as Drake- working beside all of raps heavy weights right now and of course as a member of Lil Wayne’s infamous Young Money Crew, she is only one of many. There has been a fierce movement of young, hot females set to change up the game.

Here are just a few examples of some other female MCs you can expect to see a whole lot more of…

Brittany Nicole Carpenter,  better known as Diamond, is an American rapper and former member of the group Crime Mob. She recently struck out on her own and now signed with Warner and releasing her first solo single, is prepping to enter the scene.

Eve has started to show her face a lot more and seems to be well primed for a comeback. her first three albums reached a total of over 8 million albums sold worldwide and she even started a clothing line titled “Fetish” which has done relatively well.  Eve also ranked number 48 on VH1?s “50 Greatest Women Of The Video Era” show list. The truth is we haven't seen anything from her in years, but with her face popping up in just about everyone elses video it looks like she is preparing to release a new album sometime soon.

Medinah Starr is once female MC who seems to have the potential to come out of nowhere and really turn over the game. Self-described as an activist, poet and MC- she is really doing something different. Her bio reads: “refusing to be portrayed as an over-sexualized, gun-clapping female MC, Medinah created her own lane and refused to be compromised. so many of us long for the days of Queen Latifah sporting the kente cloth, wearing an ankh and spitting lyrics about unity and self-respect.” Because of how different Starr is from her counterparts, it's no surprise that she has been releasing her music under her own label.

Also a member of the Young Money crew is Shanell. Truthfully Shanell is a singer and songwriter, not necessarily a rapper- but I wanted to throw her in as she is not only associated with best know rap fam out there right now, this spitfire  has been threatening to hit as hard as any other rapper. Plus, this girl has a voice! Unfortunately, right now she’s best known for the jewellery she wears in her nose piercing, and not so much her talent.

Personally, I'm hoping that this 'year of' trend will continue. With Nicki just releasing her first full length album, here's to hoping there are a lot more to come! We haven't had women on the scene hitting it 'as hard' as the men in the rap scene, and I for one am of the school of thought that finally, finally, it's time!
