An Eco-Friendly and Cost Effective Way To Get Through Your Period
So,
I'm out for dinner with two of my girlfriend's last week, and one of
them asks me if I've had the chance to try a Diva Cup. Having never
heard of such a thing, I just assume it's like a Pimm's Cup cocktail,
and ask her how to make one. After the laughter died down, she
explained to me that contrary to my assumption, the Diva Cup is an
eco-friendly alternative to tampons. I was intrigued.
The
Diva Cup is a contraption meant to be worn inside the vagina during
menstruation. Its job to collect menstrual fluid, rather than simply
absorbing it - like a tampon or pad. Then, once the cup is full, you
simply remove the device and dump the fluid into the toilet before
putting it back inside you.
The benefits of
the Diva Cup are many. First of all, as aforementioned, the Diva Cup is
totally eco-friendly. Because there is nothing to be flushed or thrown
out, there is no pollution associated. Secondly, the Diva Cup can be
worn for hours at a time without changing it. In fact, a woman can wear
a Diva Cup for almost eight hours before having to empty it out. And
the best part is, you can simply rinse and reuse the Diva Cup from
period to period, so you only ever need to buy one (although some
people recommend switching them up after a few cycles).
The cost is
around $40, but this will mean you will save nearly $150-$250 a year on
disposable menstrual products. Holy savings, Batman!
After hearing all about the Diva Cup, I ordered one for myself online. I'll be sure to keep you posted.
