Think Twice About Food Taking a Plane Ride To Get On Your Plate
A Localvore is a person dedicated to eating food grown and produced locally. There are a lot of good reasons to eat locally grown and produced food:
* Less resources (primarily fossil fuels) are expended packaging and transporting local food.
* It supports the local economy - more money remains in our local community.
* It is healthier - processing and preservatives are less important since the food doesn't have to travel so far.
* It is safer and thus localvores are less susceptible to food born illnesses.
Localvores are people committed to eating and learning about foods grown within their local food shed. They may have varying levels of commitment, but Localvores recognize that there are multiple benefits of eating foods grown close to home.
Today the localvore movement of eating food produced and processed close to home is gaining popularity. Buying meat from a local source gives you the opportunity to learn more about a farm and the animal-raising practices employed. When you buy locally, farmers can in turn hire local labour and use local resources and feedall of which puts money back into the community at large. Many local farmers understand the importance of maintaining a farm operation that is ecologically and socially responsible as well as economically viable.
There are a growing number of non-profit organizations across Canada working in conjunction with government bodies to develop strong regulations for the growth and sale of local food. Local Food Plus (LFP), a non-profit organization in Ontario, defines locally produced and processed food as products that, have been produced, processed, and distributed within the province in which they are consumed. In addition to this, the rules for farmers producing and selling local products are just as stringent as they are for organic farmers, which shows that they believe in many of the same practices.
