Doing the Emotional Arithmetic

Although I was unable to book my own Spirit Flight, thankfully I was able to delve into my own issues with Dr. Frank during a group session called Master Your Mind To Heal Your Body (1.5 hours).

The main topic was Holographic Memory Resolution (also available as a private session) and how to apply this technique to deeply rooted memories that shape OCD behaviours and unhealthy coping strategies. Dr. Tim presented extraordinary examples of how he'd helped individuals access past memories to resolve lingering emotions associated with those traumatic events. By going back to those specific moments, and switching the scenario to imagine an alternative (read: positive) outcome, can allow one to move beyond the pain or stress created in the past. Therefore enabling a life lived in the present moment.

Lesson Learned If you are aware of those memories and can master HMR, it's an extremely powerful tool to say the least. It's helped strengthen my ability to forgive, empathize with others, and deal with memories that enforce unreasonable self-standards. Admittedly, my perfectionist tendencies have a ways to go, but I am more aware of the triggers and feel better prepared to put them in check. Let's refer to this gradual shift, as Helene Brenner does in her amazing book I Know I'm In There Somewhere, as a ten-degree change.

People Heal People

It was after this particular session that I met Sheri I had been (as usual) a little late and the seat next to her was the only one open. In retrospect, this was the proverbial stars aligning to bring two people together.

She first seemed obsessed with my cowboy boots, and we joked about trading them for her Prada flats. Ordering wine at the bar, Sheri quickly told me she was at Miraval to heal from the recent loss of her husband, and to take a break from the property development business she had since taken over. She also alluded to suffering from using food to cope in the past. However much she needed to talk, this complete stranger instantly saw right through me and graciously wanted to lend support to the issues I was struggling with. However, I was running late (big surprise) for a spa appointment, so we agreed to meet the next morning for the Equine Experience and speak over tea after that session.

Then the rain came.

About the author:

When Malcolm Gladwell talks about “connectors,” he’s talking about Sara Graham. This gal-about-town made her mark spending five years in (and out) of publishing as Editor-in-Chief of Canada’s top teen magazines Vervegirl and FUEL. During the out part she created, designed and managed all aspects of Sister Underwear – a collection that was not only embraced by the Canadian fashion network of buyers, media and the public, but enjoyed repeat orders from boutiques located in the U.S. Although no longer deep in the publishing or fashion trenches, Sara remains curious and connected via her insatiable appetite for culture and travel. Sara also continues to produce fashion shoots through Project, her brand management company.
