Sharing Stories and Making Changes

Sharing Stories

Post-session, Sheri and I grabbed lattes and continued the discussion one-on-one.  During this time - I like to call it the power hour (and it's still indicative of the length and intensity of our conversations) we traded on how similar our past experiences were when it came to how we related to our mothers and to the use of food as a coping strategy. Taking from her life lessons, and the strength she showed after suffering the profound loss of her husband two years prior, I learned so much about self-acceptance and living in the moment. As Sheri says, It is what it is. Words to live by.

Making Changes

It's an ongoing effort towards making the ten-degree changes in my thinking towards exercise and food.

I am not pretending that this is an overnight fix. It's going to be a process of re-learning and getting my body to change. I am committed to this, and ultimately I refuse to do disservice to myself by focusing so much energy on something I am fortunate to have all around me in abundance.

Thankfully I'm finding it progressively easier to not thinking about the sins of yesterday or fixating on what I should eat now because of what I'm planning to eat later. Being aware and making smarter choices is paramountInstead of reaching for that sweet carb late at night, I slap peanut butter on a rice cake and know  that I am nourishing (as opposed to punishing) my body.

I now spend a small fortune every month at Noah's on Bloor, but with the supplements recommended by my ND Dominika, and being more mindful about when and what I eat, I feel more balanced and relaxed now than I ever have.

Of course, some days are better than others, but overall a positive energy is flowing and I am more productive being able to live and let go of thoughts that either got me stuck in the past, or slowed me down in the present.

Peace of mind is a key piece of the puzzle, of course. Having done some serious house cleaning over the past two years, it's a great feeling to have some amazing men and women in my life and I put a priority on making sure I nurture those relationships.

This is my personal experience. In the end, all roads from Miraval have led to a renewed connection to my self. I really feel like I've had a new kind of prescription filled, for life.

Sara Graham, Fashion Forward
About the author:

When Malcolm Gladwell talks about “connectors,” he’s talking about Sara Graham. This gal-about-town made her mark spending five years in (and out) of publishing as Editor-in-Chief of Canada’s top teen magazines Vervegirl and FUEL. During the out part she created, designed and managed all aspects of Sister Underwear – a collection that was not only embraced by the Canadian fashion network of buyers, media and the public, but enjoyed repeat orders from boutiques located in the U.S. Although no longer deep in the publishing or fashion trenches, Sara remains curious and connected via her insatiable appetite for culture and travel. Sara also continues to produce fashion shoots through Project, her brand management company.
