Migraine Pain Got You Down? Try These Natural Feel-Better Fixes

If you've ever had a migraine, you know that there are very few things that hurt more in life. And, in the midst of a really bad one, the thought of being hit by a train might seem like sweet relief. There are many medications, both over the counter and prescription, which assist in lessening the degree and frequency of migraine headaches, but often times these medications come with nasty side effects of their own.

That's why many migraine sufferers often look to more natural methods of coping with their migraine pain.

Here are four top alternatives to popping Tylenol 3:

1. Feverfew
This ancient herb has been used for many years as a natural combatant to pain. In many countries, Feverfew has been used to treat fever and arthritis. In the 1980's, Feverfew became especially popular in England as many doctors began recommending the herb to patients who were suffering from unbearable migraines. Because it is a natural herb, it's relatively easy to get your hands on. It is carried in most health food stores, and vitamin shops. Its effectiveness has not yet been scientifically explained or proven, however people who use it swear that it works.

2. Butterbur
Another herb, butterbur is grown in Asia, Europe, and even in certain parts of North America. Not only is butterbur said to be an effective treatment for migraine headaches, but users also have claimed that the extract has relieved discomfort associated with menstruation and asthma. Unlike Feverfew, which simply minimizes pain due to migraines, butterbur is said to also help prevent migraines. However, the use of butterbur can be a bit hard on the stomach, causing anything from constipation to vomiting, and is also said to have caused headaches in circumstances of prolonged use.

3. Yoga for Migraine
It's good for your body, and for your soul. But some people also lay claim to the fact that yoga can help to prevent migraines in people who suffer with them frequently. Although migraines are a vascular phenomenon, stress and tension are often triggers for people who suffer from chronic migraine pain. Therefore, specific yoga poses are said to aid in de-stressing your body at the first sign of migraine. A few examples of effective poses include the crescent moon pose, the tree pose, and practicing Kapalabhati - a breathing technique used specifically for cleansing and calming.

4. Diet
Many doctors agree that a person's diet plays heavily into their experience with migraine headaches. Similarly, many nutritionists believe that there are certain foods that trigger migraine activity. Many migraine sufferers have reported a drop in the degree and frequency of their headaches once they have removed certain foods from their everyday diet. Some of the foods that are said to play a part in chronic migraines include cheeses, coffee, cold cuts or pre-packaged meat, yeast and artificial flavouring, such as fake vanilla flavour.
