Signs That You're More Than Just "Dedicated"

altAddiction. It’s a serious thing. Just ask Candy Finnegan from A&E’s Intervention. Scary stuff. Well, not as scary as Candy herself, but you get the point.

Although some of us don’t consider it as such, work can be the source of an addiction too.

Someone who is addicted to their job, more commonly known as a Workaholic, faces similar struggles as an individual who is addicted drugs, alcohol or smoking. Increasingly, work addiction is being taken more and more seriously, as it effects on the individual and their families becomes more and more apparent.

Are you, or do you know, a Workaholic?

Here are some signs to watch out for:

1. Attachment to Communication Devices
Whether they are out for dinner, in bed watching TV, or on vacation, the Workaholic must stay connected at all times. You will never see them without a cell phone or laptop, and they become distraught and angry if ever it is taken away, or they can’t seem to find it.

2. Inability to Relax

For someone who attached to their job, reading, chatting and even sleeping at night can become impossible tasks. With their mind focused on the day’s work, or the work to come tomorrow, it is difficult for the Workaholic to unwind. Downtime often causes anxiety and nervousness, which can result in pacing, tapping, or other nervous ticks. They find the need to stay busy at all times, even in bed or in the bathroom.

3. Constant Dissatisfaction
Tying into the above point, the Workaholic always is disappointed in his or herself. Their contributions both in the office and at home are never good enough. They criticize themselves harshly, and feel themselves not worthy of praise.

4. Deflects Confrontation

If you confront this person about their problem, they become defensive, and deflective. They make excuses for their late hours, and claim that the accuser does not understand their job. They speak in an elevated tone, condescending to whom thy are speaking to. They might often shut down, or physically walk away from the conversation, only to bury themselves in more work.
