While
some of us pack our bags for a March getaway, The Canadian Cancer
Society issued a warning.
Alarming statistics were released this week
in regards to sun safety, student awareness, and base tanning.
An
Environics poll in Ontario showed that too many Ontarians still
continue to expose themselves to cancer-causing UV radiation by either
sun exposure or using tanning equipment. Unsurprisingly, skin cancer
has now grown to become the most common form of cancer in Ontarians.
in response to their findings, The Canadian Cancer Society has released a publication called Insight on Cancer: Sun Exposure and Protective Behaviors in Ontario. The
publication is said to provide information based on a survey conducted
in 2006 in addition to new findings. This survey showed that over
time, even in the face of warnings, Ontarians have increased their
exposure to dangerous sunlight without taking any measures to protect
themselves!
They
also conducted an poll specific to Ontario in January 2011 that showed
many Ontarians still engage in the act of “base tanning” in tanning
beds before they go away on vacation.
The
poll showed that 49% of students believe that hitting the beds prior
to a jetset can actually protect then from sunburn on the beach, thus
deeming it safe and smart to tan indoors.
The
Canadian Cancer Society continues to warn students, as well as all
Canadians, that indoor tanning, and unprotected outdoor tanning, is
always harmful.
