Feeling a little blue lately? Maybe you're not eating enough fish.
Although everyone loves to cook up a few steaks or some burgers and hot dogs at a summertime barbecue, maybe you should think about throwing a little salmon or a seabass filet on the grill next time you're fixin' to enjoy an outdoor meal. There's no better time than summer to enjoy the mild, light taste of fresh fish, especially when it's accompanied by mango salsa or a plate of jasmine rice. And - bonus! - scientists are now speculating that there may be something in fish that can help to naturally lift your mood.
The researchers discovered that omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish, helped normalize the moods of bipolar mice and reduced cravings for alcohol and food, reports ScienceDaily.com. Although much more research is needed in this area, the scientists believe that the findings could have serious implications for people who currently take psychiatric drugs. Omega-3 fatty acids carry none of the harmful side effects of many prescription medications, and they're safe for use in women who are pregnant or intend to be pregnant.
So this summer, enjoy your fish. It's not just good for your body - it's good for your brain, too.
