We've got it pretty good in Canada, but in some parts of the world, women are still far from equal. In Saudi Arabia, for example, women are forbidden from doing almost anything without their husband's permission - like driving. However, some ladies are fighting back against these archaic, sexist and unfair policies.
The driving ban, in particular, is especially restrictive for Saudi women. Without the ability to drive, women must wait for the man of the house to drive them where they want to go - that, or spend money on a taxi. The driving ban limits women's social lives, their ability to work and even their ability to care for their kids and families. But now, the defiance of many Saudi ladies might bring this age-old ban crumbling.
Manal, a Saudi woman, and 10 other people are organizing a campaign on Facebook and Twitter urging women in the kingdom with international driver’s licenses to join them by driving openly on the streets of Saudi Arabia, reports Bloomberg.
"I'm doing it because I'm frustrated, angry and mad," Manal, who asked to be identified only by her first name, told the news source." It's 2011 and we're still discussing this insignificant right for women." With protests brewing in the Arab world since Egypt's legendary revolt, our hopes are with the women of Saudi Arabia that they can help their country take a step closer to parity.
