Get Your Life In Order With Five Easy Steps

I'm sure that everyone can agree on the fact that an organized home is a much more pleasant space to be in. Looking for that perfect sweater or tracking down the scotch tape becomes a breeze, rather than a chore.

However, staying organized is a task much easier executed by some than others. Often times, creative types find it difficult to keep their spaces neat and tidy. Their clothing covers the floor like a Persian rug, dishes line the counters and flat surfaces - even in the washroom, and the filing cabinet serves simply as a foot stool.

If this sounds like your life, then here are five easy ways to get on the path to total organization:

1. Dishes
Even though many of us want to slip into a deep sleep after a hearty meal, getting into the habit of putting your dishes in the sink immediately after using them is a great practice to adopt. Make sure to take it one step further than simply just leaving them in the sink. Start to wash, rinse, dry and replace after every single use. By making a conscious effort to do this, you will notice a big change in the appearance of your kitchen.

2. Closet
Making sure your closet is tidy not only helps to keep your place looking neat, but it also maintains the quality of your clothes. To avoid having an over-cluttered closet, try keeping your summer clothing in storage over the winter, and winter clothes in storage over the summer. make sure that you have year-round access to wherever your store your alternate wardrobe in the event that you go on vacation, or the weather takes a turn for the worse.

3. Surfaces
Keeping surfaces clean and clear is a great way to maintain the overall look of your home. Rather than cluttering your counters and vanity tops with picture frames, old papers, change, books and other assorted items, keep all of your surfaces as bare are possible. Pick one or two prized items to display, and keep everything else in cupboards or in drawers.

4. Papers, Change and Other Clutter
As a follow up to point #3, keeping clutter out of the way is essential to staying organized. If you don't feel like dropping a few bills at IKEA, you can always opt for shoe boxes. Paint them all one colour that fits into the colour scheme of the room, or just leave them as they are and stash them in the closet. Label one for bills, one for change, one for important documents and miscellaneous. Alternatively, use clear Tupperware containers so that you can skip the labeling process.

5. Laundry Day
Designate one day for laundry and plan ahead. Don't let your dirty clothes pile up on the bathroom floor. Buy a tasteful looking hamper that is no bigger than a garbage bag (so as not to afford you room to save your yucky clothes for too long) and set aside one day, maybe a Sunday, to do all of your laundry. By making laundry day a part of your weekly routine, you can avoid a nasty build up.
