Summer comes in with a rush of green, but soaring
temperatures and dry spells can leave lush lawns looking dry, brittle
and brown as the season wears on. Keeping your lawn fresh costs time and
money, but with these tips courtesy of Southern Living, you can have a
gorgeous yard that'll be the not-so-secret envy of all your neighbors.
"Lawns are in a constant state of change," explains Phil Catron, of NaturaLawn of America, to the magazine. "The soil changes, the trees get taller, and the shade gets deeper. Take notice of these changes, and work to keep the soil healthy."
According to Catron, a beautiful lawn has to be built from the ground up - literally and figuratively. If you use the right soils and fertilizers, your lawn will be less susceptible to pests, weeds and other problems as time goes on. He recommends organic varieties, which will keep both your lawn and your family healthy as your kids frolic in the sprinklers and sprawl out in the grass while playing summertime games.
"I always tell new customers that getting a healthy lawn is just like building a house," he says. "If you take your time to build a solid foundation, you'll get a great end product that stands the test of time."
