Sex Keeps You Healthy

Here's to your health

altDo you need another reason to have sex? I didn't think so. But for those health-conscious folks who are looking to incorporate great sex into healthy living routines, there are a multitude of health benefits associated with sexual activity.

Feeling stressed? Sex has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve management of stressful situations. It has also been linked with boosted immune systems and higher levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that can help ward off the common cold and flu.

Do you avoid having sex because you have a headache? Consider this: sex is associated with pain relief and alleviation of premenstrual symptoms. The theory goes that the increase in oxytocin levels during the sexual response cycle results in a release of palliative endorphins. Heightened oxytocin levels are also credited with inducing a state of relaxation and calm. Accordingly, sex can facilitate a good night's sleep, which is associated with a whole host of other health benefits.

Heart health is also correlated with an active, healthy sex life. A recent study found that men who have sex three or more times per week have a 50 percent lower risk of heart attack or stroke. And since sex can boost testosterone production, it is associated with strengthened bones and muscles.

And finally, sex can be a calorie-burning workout. Whether enjoyed alone, in pairs or as part of a group, good sex may involve movement, flexibility, exercise and an elevated heart rate.

So go ahead, wriggle around, sweat, breathe deeply and bend over backwards for the sake of your health. Have fun and always practice safer sex.
