You already know that being overweight can lead to health problems, depression and even death. But did you know that being obese can also put a serious damper on your sex life? Being overweight doesn't necessarily mean you're doomed to a sexless life - plenty of people who are carrying more than a few extra pounds have found love, sex and happiness. However, even if you do find that special someone, being overweight might mean that you can't enjoy your time in the bedroom the same way normal-weight people can, a new study suggests.
The study, published in the May issue of the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, found that obese people of both genders reported that they were far less sexually satisfied than the general population, with women being slightly less satisfied than men, USA Today reports. Participants answered no-holds-barred questions about sexual interest, desire, arousal, orgasm, behavior, relationships, masturbation and dysfunction, revealing that those who are overweight were more likely to face sexual problems than others.
"Our findings contribute to a growing body of research that indicates obesity is associated with reduced sexual functioning and sexual quality of life," says study author Truls Ostbye, a professor in the department of community and family medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Of course, correlation does not equal causation. Are obese people less satisfied with sex because society tells them that they're not sexy? Or are their sexual issues physical problems that are caused by their weight?
