These days, not every encounter leads to a lasting
courtship. Most of us have had a romp in the hay (or two, or ten) that
didn't develop into anything serious, but unless you're Samantha from
Sex and the City, you'll eventually end up wanting something more than
one-night stands. So how can you tell if he's looking for a casual
hook-up, or thinking about making you his girlfriend?
According to Cosmopolitan, all you need to do is keep your eyes open for a little something called "peacocking." Peacocks spread their flamboyant tail feathers in an attempt to attract potential mates, and a guy who's looking to get in your pants will employ the same strategy. Instead of showing off feathers, however, he'll be flaunting his expensive clothes, speedy sports car, high-income job and designer watch.
Researchers at the University of Texas - San Antonio, the University of Minnesota and Rice University have found that "peacocking" actually works when it comes to getting women in the sack. But while women wanted to go out on a date or two with the guys who showed off the goods, they found the men who didn't flaunt their wealth were more desirable as long-term relationship prospects. Why? Perhaps when it comes to serious relationships, we're just not that superficial - and we know that when a guy is trying to lure us with a pricy restaurant bill, he's probably just looking to hook-up.
