DoSomething.org Does Something Good

Following Oprah's lead, the folks at DoSomething.org (a teen-empowering group cofounded by formerMelrose Place resident Andrew Shue) have launched an online PSA that recreates the alleged incident between the R&B stars in the hopes of showing the ugliness of dating abuse.

And to counter some of the shocking reactions to the whole "beat her down" mess.

According to The New York Times, Chris Brown can do no wrong in the eyes of the under-18 set. In fact, many students had sympathy for him and instead blamed Rihanna for the Feb. 8 scuffle, which may leave Chris a convicted felon.

"She probably made him mad for him to react like that," said one ninth grader in Hostos-Lincoln Academy in the Bronx. "You know, like, bring it on?"

Available on YouTube, the brief video begins with a warning about graphic images and notes the following dramatization is based on "actual detective notes...but it happens every day." It closes with the statistic that one in three teenagers is abused in a relationship, and promotes free bracelets one blue, two black that spread awareness about dating abuse.

Let's hope Rihanna and all "the Rihanna's of the world" take the message to heart.

But the Chris Brown's out there probably need a more compelling "scared straight" version, you know, one showing the LAPD's patented "Rodney King Special" arrest procedure and strip search, a clip of some of the upstanding citizens in lock-up they're likely to meet like Bubba "You Sure Got a Purty Mouth" Jones, and of course the "you want to hit somebody, bring it" beat down from the girls' father, brothers and assorted male friends.

Maybe they're saving it for Part Two.
