Type A TV Producer Meets Her Boorish Male Match
The battle of the sexes ensues in The Ugly Truth when tightly wound TV producer Abby (Katherine Heigl) is forced to work with seemingly sexist loud and boorish personality Mike (Gerard Butler).
We've heard the story before (most recently in The Proposal, with Bullock, and with Heigl again in Knocked Up): professional yet uptight woman meets laid back dude who wears her down, makes her relax, and they discover they're in love with each other. We also have more of the male bluntness a la He's Just Not That Into You.
Predictable? Of course. But that's ok. We keep going back to see the same story over and over again for a reason: we like the fairytale, the idea that opposites attract, that there's someone for everyone, and that there's a happy ending. Even though it seems like the female protagonist is hopeless in the realm of love, she always manages to find her Mr. Darcy.
There is a funny slapstick Cyrano scenario as well as an orgasm in a restaurant that would have Meg Ryan say, I'll have what she's having. The film keeps a good pace, combines silly humour with witty humour, and has nice eye candy (hello soap stud Eric Winter... and his abs!). Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), John Michael Higgins (Kath & Kim) and Bree Turner (Good Girls Don't) are hilarious in supporting roles.
Overall a fun lighthearted summer rom com that'll have you laughing. Check it out when it hits theatres on July 24th.
