Escape The Summer Heat And Give Yourself Chills
The Fourth Annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival r
uns at the Bloor Cinema from August 14 to 21. Now that Toronto is finally getting the long awaited summer sun, After Dark's move from October to August gives thechance to escape the heat with chilling flicks. The festival serves up horror, gore, sci-fi and martial arts in a jam-packed movie marathon week.
This year has a wide range from opening night's Black Dynamite (a film that channelled Blaxploitation films of yonder years;screening on Aug 14 @ 7) to closing night's Grace (think Rosemary's Baby andthe final book in the Twilight series; Aug 21 @ 7). In between are plethora of creatures including Zombie Nazis in Dead Snow (Aug 16 @ 6:45) and Romanian vampires in Strigoi (Aug 17 @ 9:30). And for those with strong constitutions who dig stomach-churning gore-fests there's Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl (from the twisted mind that brought us last year's Tokyo Gore Police, Aug 17 @ 7) and Embodimentof Evil, which is apparently not for the faint of heart (Aug 15 @ 11:30).
Celebrity casting brings star power to Franklyn (Aug 15 @5:30) and Trick 'r Treat. The former is a sci-fi thriller starring Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green and Sam Riley, and the latter, which has been garnering buzz, stars True Blood's Anna Paquin and X2's Brain Cox. And it begs to mentionthat martial art genius Jet Li stars in Peter Chan's period battle piece, Warlords (Aug 16 @ 3:45).
