Scott Pilgrim V.S. The World Shot in Toronto
Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is your average guy in his early twenties. Not the smoothest, slightly geeky, and in a band. He falls hard for a girl named Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). However, nothing in life is simple and you often have to fight for what you want.
In Scott's case the fighting is quite literal and he must defeat Ramona's seven evil exes in order to date her. Battle after battle ensues in such epic locations as Casa Loma and Lee's Palace (in fact part of the fun for Torontonians is recognizing areas of our fair city). Some familiar faces include Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman and Kieran Culkin, while the familiar voice of SNL's Bill Hader narrates throughout. Director/writer Edgar Wright set forth to do a difficult task: to take an awesome graphic novel series (the last book of which only came out last month) and cram it into one movie.
It's always a tough task to go from paper to the screen, and rarely does it succeed. Luckily, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of those rare times...though I was sad the chick fight didn't take part in the Toronto Reference Library. Being true to not only the style of the comic (some shots exactly as they were drawn), but also to the humour and one of the best characters of all: the city of Toronto.
Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spacedgreat British sitcom starring Simon Pegg, if you haven't seen it yet you should fix that) brought his usual sense of timing and integrated a number of fun pop cultural references. A fantastic film for the video game generation. Comic creator genius Bryan Lee O'Malley should be pleased.
