What is the Bechdel Test?

altIf you take a look at the movies playing in theaters right now, you'll find that the vast majority of them star men. That's nothing new. But are you aware of a neat little test you can do that helps quantify the ways in which women are marginalized in film and television? It's called the Bechdel Test, and it goes like this:

1. Are there are least two female characters? 2. Do they have at least one conversation with each other? 3. Do they talk about something other than a man?        To pass the test, a movie must meet all three criteria. You might be shocked to find how few movies actually pass this test.

Here's a short list of some that don't - Fight Club, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Aladdin, The Social Network, The Hurt Locker, Inception, How To Train Your Dragon and Iron Man 2, among many others. Of course, many movies (and some quite unexpected ones) do pass the test, like Kill Bill, Rosemary's Baby, Alien, The Incredibles, The Devil Wears Prada and Alien. To be clear, the Bechdel Test isn't necessarily a test of a movie's quality - or even necessarily a test of its gender equality. Plenty of great movies, like Full Metal Jacket and The Shawshank Redemption, don't feature any ladies because they're set in Vietnam and a men's prison, respectively.
