Could there be a more delicate time to release a movie about overspending? Well, yes. And no. Don't we all need an escape from our Visa statement? Enter Confessions of a Shopaholic, opening this Valentine's Day Weekend. This is a defining moment in chick flicks and chick lit. Can this "feel-good" genre actually live up to its moniker and comfort moviegoers in this time of social uncertainty and fiscal upheaval?

In a most glamorous version New York City, Rebecca Bloomwood is a fun-loving girl who is really good at shoppinga little too good, perhaps. She dreams of working for her favorite fashion magazine, but can't quite get her foot in the dooruntil ironically, she snags a job as a columnist for a financial magazine published by the same company.

The romantic comedy is opening at a time when many "shopaholics" are drowning in credit card debt. Disney marketers are hoping the the bleak economic climate could work to its advantage. The lag time between when a film is developed and when it rolls into theaters points out how film releases can be complicated by the turn of current events. Bubbly scene-stealer Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) stars in the film from blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director P.J. Hogan. The screenplay is based on the chick-lit classics "Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella.
