Tragic Fall Claims The Life Of British Stage and Screen Star

According to a written family statement, Natasha Richardson, film star, Tony-winning stage actress and a member of the famed Redgrave acting family, has died.

"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

Richardson was injured during a skiing accident on Monday in Canada and flown to a hospital in New York City on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the resort where the accident occurred noted Richardson was not wearing a helmet while skiing and didn't collide with anything when she fell.

Family members had been seen coming and going from the New York hospital where Richardson was taken. Richardson's husband Liam Neeson, her mother, Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, her sister Joely Richardson and two sons, Michael, 13, and Daniel, 12, had gathered at her beside.

The statement did not give details on the cause of death.
