The Singer and Dancer Is Gone But Not Forgotten

Nine years ago today R&B star Aaliyah tragically died in a heartbreaking plane crash. Only moments after take off, she and her entourage were killed upon impact as her small chartered plane hit the ground, only meters from the runway. She had just wrapped from shooting the video from Rock The Boat and was eager to get home to the United States.

Nearly a decade later, she is still missed and remembered by many of her dear friends, including Missy Elliot. Today, the hip-hopper released a statement in commemoration of her departed best friend.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of (Aaliyah) or watch a video or play her music. I miss her every day. I think it's hard for Aaliyah to be duplicated, because she had her own lane.... But Ciara is an R&B singer who loves to dance, and Aaliyah was that same kinda artist. We knew when she dropped a record, we couldn't wait for the video. I think Aaliyah has influenced artists like Ciara."

Ciara, who has often been compared to Aaliyah, both in terms of her musical abilities and her incredible dancing, has often credited the late singer as a major inspiration.

R.I.P. Aaliyah.
