Review: The WonderBra Baby Love

Women with smaller breasts have less storage capacity

I was a bit hesitant when our editor asked me to review a nursing bra, as I'm no bra expert. I've been small-chested all my life up until the pregnancy thing got going, and even after, with what my husband and I playfully refer to as my "porn-star boobs", the lactation consultant called them "smaller breasts." As in, "Women with smaller breasts have less storage capacity," an explanation for why the babe wanted to eat pretty much constantly. But since I am in nursing bras all the time now, and expect I will be for the next year or so, I eventually figured I'd try it.

First question was what size to order, because going to a store and trying something on doesn't happen with a two-month-old. I'd gotten wildly different measurements at different stores shopping at the end of my pregnancy, even on the same day. I asked for a 36B because that's what I was wearing from Thyme Maternity, although I was worried it might be small what with the porn-star boobs and all.

The WonderBra Baby Love, it turns out, is a pretty, lacy thing. I went for wire-free for comfort's sake, and nursing bras - especially wire-free ones - usually are not tremendously attractive, so that was a pleasant surprise. (My Thyme Maternity ones could be described as simple and perhaps sporty, much better than the matronly alternatives I found elsewhere, but that's about it. Could this lactating mama get to feel sexy?) The lace is a spandex-blend material that feels weirdly rubbery on the inside, almost like the tops of thigh-high pantyhose but a lot thinner. I wasn't sure how comfortable that would be. There's also a rosette in the middle that's hard and sticks out, which I'll be cutting off to avoid the third-nipple effect under clingy clothes. That's it for initial concerns. Now for the good news: It fit!!! On the tighter hooks, but similar fit to the Thyme one of the same size. I added disposable nursing pads, put on a t-shirt, strapped my baby carrier over, and took Izzy out all day with my sister.

It was a hot day and my front got quite sweaty under the baby, but this bra was actually quite comfortable, to the point that I forgot I was wearing it. Opening and closing the clasps to feed was easy. Everything stayed put and worked fine. Yay!

So at least for this smaller-chested nursing mama, the WonderBra Baby Love is a keeper. Who'da thunk a nursing bra could be comfortable and a little bit sexy too?

From the manufacturer: The Baby Love collection will be available in Sears, The Bay and specialty boutiques as of August 2010 at a suggested retail price of $39.00.
