Will single-sex dormitories stop your kids from gettin' it on in college?

altThe Catholic University of America has, of course, a vested interest in making sure its students keep it in their pants - after all, the Catholic Church is staunchly against premarital sex of any kind. Of course, kids at university are usually pretty into premarital sex, which puts this religious institution in a bit of a bind. But now the president has an idea: He plans to convert all of the university's dorms into single-sex housing.

CUA president John Garvey opined in a Wall Street Journal column last week, "Here is one simple step colleges can take to reduce both binge drinking and hooking up: Go back to single-sex residences."

"I know it's countercultural," he admits. But he cites several studies that have found students in single-sex dormitories are less likely to have sexual partners and binge drink on a regular basis. (Of course, it's possible that the kind of people who would choose single-sex dorms - or schools that have them - are already less likely to engage in those activities.)

What do you think? Would a single-sex dorm have made you chaste in college? Would you prefer your kids attended a school that kept them segregated from the opposite sex?
