With Mother's Day just around the corner, Save the Children has decided to take a look at which nations appreciate moms the most by examining maternity leave, life expectancy, infant mortality and other factors in 164 countries. Not surprisingly, the Associated Press reports that Norway - a country known for its social liberalism, gender equality, progressive politics and strong social safety net - came in with top honors.
The study found that Norway is, statistically, the best place to raise a child because infant and maternal mortality rates are low, women can expect long lives and access to education, and maternity leave lasts around a year. A typical Norwegian woman will live to be 83 years old, and just one in 175 will lose a child before age 5. Australia and Iceland joined Norway at the top, while Afghanistan came in last. In Afghanistan, women can expect to live to be 45 (the lowest female life expectancy in the world), and one in 11 will die in childbirth. Additionally, one out of five Afghani children won't see his or her fifth birthday. Canada came in at number 20, while the United States ranked 31.
