Preparing your home for a new baby

altWith a baby on the way, you've already got so much on your mind - from what to name your little one to how you'll get your beach body back to how you'll pay for the endless stream of diapers Junior will need. But if there's one thing that needs to be at the forefront of your thoughts, it's how to prepare your home for your new baby's arrival in order to minimize stress for yourself, your partner and your little one. Here are a few things to think about as you get ready to usher a new life into the world.

If your nesting instinct has kicked in, you're probably already busy decorating and designing Junior's nursery. Although it may be a while before he or she is crawling, you'll still want to take precautions to make sure that everything is safe. Make sure that your cover electrical outlets with little plastic stoppers - but leave one free for a nightlight, as many infants and young toddlers want a little glow to sleep by.

Drawers and cabinets should always be locked, especially those that contain hazardous chemicals like household cleaners, prescription pills and even toothpaste or mouthwash. Babies explore with their mouths, so it's a safe bet that your little one will be sticking all kinds of things in his maw that don't belong there. Make sure he can't get his hands on anything that could block his windpipe, like marbles or small toys.

Having a baby is exciting, so don't let your worries overwhelm the joy of being a new mother. Take these precautions and you'll know that your little one is safe.
