Don't Let Binky Freeze In The Cold

Pet clothing isn’t just for people who think their pets are actually human beings.  Show your pup or kitten some love with some fashion-y threads that are functional and practical. Warning: might lead to lots of wet kisses/mean stares on the street.
 
The first thing to consider when choosing the perfect pet clothing is the kind of material that the clothing is made of: Is the material is safe? Any irritation or rash inducing qualities? Flame retardant? The best materials, especially for the winter, are fleece, cashmere and those that are knitted. They provide warmth, are easy to wash and come in many different colours!
 
Second, you’ll want to note good design, meaning it’s functional and fashionable. Function means your pet can move freely with the garment on. They should not feel constricted by the garment.
 
Consider that your pet will need to be fitted for his or her garment. Most clothing supply stores will be able to do this for you. Just let them know that you are a first time purchaser, or if little Billy or Moe (pictured above modeling his new gear) has grown in the past few months.
 
The last consideration in choosing the perfect pet sweater is the breed of your perfect pet. Is your pet very furry? Or do they have practically no hair at all? Did they recently get a hair-cut? There are actually some breeds that require a specific kind of clothing especially during the cold months of winter – i.e., small dogs would need thicker clothes than the bigger breeds who have naturally warm coats already.

Home Made!
You can always make your own makeshift pet clothes. Get a soft and warm sleeve off an old sweater or snip off a turtle neck. You’ll want to cover the torso and the neck area. Make sure you make holes for your pets legs, head and bum! And if it’s coming from an old sweater, make sure to launder with gentle soap. Nothing to harsh or fragrant and it might be irritating to your pets skin. If you’re pet is large enough, they might be able to wear the whole sweater. We like old worn hoodies with a zip or button opening, so you can sort of drape it around the neck and let their legs be free. Baby jumpsuits are also a good option for kitties and small pooches.
