Three Ways Women Are Getting Pregnant Today

Where do babies come from?

It's a question that most of us asked as children, and no matter how your parents or teachers chose to handle the query (using cliched allegory, sewing finger puppets, chasing a Xanax with a stiff drink etc.) you likely walked away ill-informed.

Sure, we all know that A + B = baby, but who said that getting pregnant was necessarily that easy? Millions of women struggle with conception every year. For some, it's simply a matter of bad timing, or not knowing their ovulation cycles. Some women see results after trying new positions, or having sex at different times in the day. For others, however, the issues can be a lot more complex, leaving couples to seek other solutions.

Over the last few decades, science has provided women with a number of alternatives. Popularized by books and television, many of these methods have become increasingly common among the average North American woman. Ranging from womb-rental to hormone treatments, thousands of strong willed women are hearing the word barren and responding with dare me.

Here are just a few of the ways that woman are having children today:

Medication
Fertility medication's primary goal is to stimulate follicle development of the ovary. There are many different types of medications to chose from, but their main goal is to that enhance ovarian activity. Among the different agents used in these medications are Gonadotropin releasing hormones, Estrogen antagonists, or Gonadotropins. Doctors often recommend these types of treatments first, before discussing some of the more aggressive or invasive approaches to getting pregnant.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF is the process of removing a woman's egg, and allowing sperm cells to fertilize the egg in a controlled environment outside the woman's body. Once the egg is successfully fertilized, it is re-implanted back into the woman's womb, where the fetus can grow and develop like in other pregnancies. In the last ten years, this practise has become increasingly common. Interestingly, though, the number of twins that have been born in North America has also jumped during the years that IVF treatments became more readily available. That;s because opting to use In Vitro Fertilization boosts your odds of having twins!

Surrogacy

Essentially, surrogacy is an arrangement where a third party female agrees to become pregnant, carry and deliver a child for a couple. There are multiple surrogacy agencies in Canada, wherein there a databases of thousands of women looking to become surrogates. This way, a couple can select the perfect surrogate for their needs. Often, the surrogate spends a lot of time with parents-to-be before birth, and the parents-to-be look after her financially all the way through term.
