Although accidental pregnancies happen all the time, for
many women, trying to conceive is an uphill battle. If more than a year
has gone by and you haven't successfully become pregnant, it may be time
to seek the help of a specialist. And you're not alone - in vitro
fertilization, one of the most common fertility treatments, is popular
all across North America.
In the United States, Fertility Nation reports that women on the East Coast - particularly those in Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey - were the most likely to seek infertility treatments like IVF, while those in the more rural states of Maine, Montana and Wyoming were least likely. The reasons are varied - for one thing, less urbane states may have less access to infertility care. For another, women in densely populated cities are statistically more likely than those in rural places to delay marriage and childbirth, meaning that they may be older, on average, when they begin trying to conceive. Women in the urban areas of the east coast are also statistically wealthier, meaning they can afford expensive IVF cycles.
As for Canada, data collected by the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society show that women who conceive via IVF are no more likely than their peers who conceive naturally to suffer complications or birth defects.
If you're struggling to start a family, IVF may be an option for you.
