My Montreal: Cozy Comfort Food at Beauty's

Where a Man Can Make You the Perfect Croque Madame in a Delicious 15 Minutes

Ah, nothing beats breakfast at Beauty's. On a recent carb-craving outing at this fabled local haunt, I snapped this photo of my breakfast mate: fellow musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, of Jerusalem in My Heart, Pas Chic Chic. Like entering a good friend's home, Beauty's lives up to it's cozy, down-to-earth brand. The owner stands at the end of the counter near the door and welcomes patrons inside. As a woman, it's nice to see nurturing men in a kitchen who are better at making my favorite comfort foods than I am! I loved Aunties and Uncles in Toronto for the same reason. While the Toronto restaurant has thirty-something aged men cooking and handing you perfect Croque Madames and poached pears, Beauty's features sixty-something hosts there making sure it's "all good" with the most important meal of the day.

The ambiance makes you feel like Sinatra could walk in at any moment. It's truly maintained the 1940's feel. I had a lima bean soup and a Mediterranean sandwich at the genuine vintage lunch counter. Both blew my mind in freshness and taste. They hand pick their produce every day. The vegetables and chicken in the sandwich were grilled over an open flame and everything was cooked to perfection. These guys are serious. For a low key diner on the corner of Mount Royal and St Urbain, it has a commitment to the best. There are certain restaurants in Montreal at which I always leave happy, and this is one of them. The amazing soup from Beauty's is for sale in the "to go" fridge near the door.

At the foot of Mount Royal, Beauty's is a place to come home to after sledding or taking a long walk. Remember to order real maple syrup if you get the pancakes. Booths can fit two, four or eight, so bring your mile-end hottie or bring your whole family. The carpeting on the floor and acoustic tiles on the ceiling make this place peaceful despite large crowds.
