Tweet Kings to Follow Right Now

As Selected by Editorial Director Si Si Penaloza

News no longer breaks, it tweets. Twitterers tapped out tweets during the earthquake in China while the ground was still shaking. One of the first images of the airliner in the Hudson River, picked up by major newspapers, was tweeted by a 23-year-old with an iPhone. Twitter has become the top venue for citizen journalism". The critical bliss of Twitter is that it happens in real time. If you want to find out about something happening "right now", the place to go is Twitter. Not Google.

One thing I appreciate about Twitter is that one (or one's publicist or Twitter Ghostwriter) must be clever and quick to be followed. You can't be stunningly gorgeous but stupidly thick and be influential on Twitter. In this sense, this technology is a validating improvement over off-line life. This is one arena where smart people rule, no contest. Our Top Canadian Women on Twitter List certainly got people talking, both online and off; on that note, I'll be updating both lists in Fall 2009 with new stats and additions, stay tuned.

unmarketing / Scott Stratten Stop Marketing, Start Engaging. Speaker/Jedi of viral marketing. Made 60 online movies with over 60 mill views. Bouncer of Twitter
I admit it. I get giddy when I "favorite" Scott Stratten's tweets. And I've hovered and clicked to save a piece of Scott about a dozen times since I started experimental tweeting in early '08. Stratten is the President of Un-Marketing.com. He is an expert in Viral, Social, and Authentic Marketing which he calls Un-Marketing. His online viral movies have been seen over 60 million times and has generated massive profits and lists for himself and his clients. He was named one of the "Most Influential People on Twitter"and recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Mashable.com, USA Today, CNN.com and Fast Company. Is it just me or does Stratten kind of look like the Oxygen Network's answer to Russell Crowe in Gladiator, you know, in the off-hours - in between pillaging villages and making time with the ladies. My Only Question Is: What's catching Scott's eye in his profile pic? Let's get this Twitter speculation started: #StrattenEye

My Favorite Dispatches from Stratten:

If anyone on Twitter is near Bay and Bloor in TO, I just waved. That was just for u. Ur welcome.

Just went by Lee's Palace in Toronto. I learned more about bizfrom their talent booker (Craig) in 30 mins when I was 20, then all of college

Vegas, June 9th, My Monster Tweet-up @ Diablo's at Monte Carlo. You need to be there. networking, drinks, dancing

K, off to bed. And by "bed" I mean tweet horizontally.

shinangovani / Shinan is the social columnist for Canada's National Post, and author of the upcoming Bold Face Names.

Seismic Tweets from SG:

The fear in New Yorkers' eyes these days is palpable. Combine smarmy with fear, and Houston, you've got a problem.

Doug Coupland Never left art school

I remember flying to Vancouver in 2002 to strategically woo Douglas Coupland for a curatorial project. I ended up flying home with a feverishly, mad, aching crush on Michael Turner, novelist, The Pornographer's Poem. That's the way it tends to play out as you get closer to the Rockies. I have been an avid Coupland watcher for over a decade and enjoy his feed the way I enjoy my favorite comfort cereal. When Coupland surfaced on Twitter, I felt my TweetDeck was finally complete. The Question of the Hour: Will Coupland do More Drinkin' and Tweetin' Before the Week is Out? Tweet on That! #CouplandDrunk

Selected Coupland Quips:

Bad news ...turns out I have GWES (Groudskeeper Willy Eyebrow Syndrome.) I thought I'd escaped it.

I just earned that if you write Dear Santa within a Tweet, a software bot automatically makes "Santa Claus" followyou. Deeply deeply creepy.

Rick Mercer When you're looking for something to do online twitter rickmercer! Twittering since 2008

Bruce LaBruce is a filmmaker, writer, photographer and artist living in Toronto.

High-powered film executive Charlotte Mickie hosts an annual New Year's Day Brunch, which where Bruce La Bruce once remarked to me, "With a name like Si Si, you must see some." And just like that, he moved on to the savory quiche. That same year, I had "helped" my friend Phil Klygo who was having a hard time having a hard time in a LaBruce photoshoot. I can attest, you never forget your first encounter with LaBruce. His films have blazed a provocative trail across the globe - from Hong Kong to Madrid to Istanbul. The Toronto-based film-maker, writer, and photographer is at the vanguard of the identity politics - musuem curriculm intersect. His latest feature film, Otto; or, Up with Dead People, will had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. LaBruce bas been a frequent writer for Dutch, The National Post, and more recently, Nerve.com. and Black Book. Inquiring Minds Want to Know: What's it Like to Audition for LaBruce? Spark it Up: #OttoAuditions

My Favourite Tweets from BLAB:

Still looking for a hot young male willing to rollerblade in a jockstrap for a performance art piece in Zurich...

Is it just me or is there something vaguely infantile about Twitter?

In a nod to full disclosure, I admit that I've harboured a pro-crush on Andrew Gorham for years. As the Arts Editor at The Globe and Mail, Gorham has greenlit a bolder, more provocative regime of cultural coverage and crit in the nation's reigning paper of record. Gorham joined the Globe in 2000 after a short stint at The National Post and has been the arts editor for the past four years. Painful Question: What was His Most Recent Tattoo and Where is it on His Body? The Search is On: #GorhamTattoo

Great list! Would be greatly improved if there were links to each guy's Twitter account -- or at least their Twitter IDs shown. As is, I can't find half of these peeps on Twitter.
