Tweet Kings to Follow Right Now
As Selected by Editorial Director Si Si Penaloza
News no longer breaks, it tweets. Twitterers tapped out tweets during the earthquake in China while the ground was still shaking. One of the first images of the airliner in the Hudson River, picked up by major newspapers, was tweeted by a 23-year-old with an iPhone. Twitter has become the top venue for citizen journalism". The critical bliss of Twitter is that it happens in real time. If you want to find out about something happening "right now", the place to go is Twitter. Not Google.
One thing I appreciate about Twitter is that one (or one's publicist or Twitter Ghostwriter) must be clever and quick to be followed. You can't be stunningly gorgeous but stupidly thick and be influential on Twitter. In this sense, this technology is a validating improvement over off-line life. This is one arena where smart people rule, no contest. Our Top Canadian Women on Twitter List certainly got people talking, both online and off; on that note, I'll be updating both lists in Fall 2009 with new stats and additions, stay tuned.

strombo / G. Stroumboulopoulos The official Twitter of George Stroumboulopoulos. The other ones are fakes.
12,065 followers · from 416 ·
Several years ago, I'd just moved back to Toronto from New York and met George Stroumboulopoulos at one of the first society events I attended. It was a coyly-played Bachelor Auction in support of Breast Cancer at the Design Exchange. And George was the only boy on the block to provoke a bidding war - a veritable checkbook catfight. It was quite the intro to Toronto's reigning answer to smart and sexy. I admire how genuinely interactive and engaging Strombo is on Twitter. And I LOVE the way he's so pistol-quick at setting us ladies up with interesting guys. As we can see with his tweet to @mjsugar below. What a guy! I mean, this is a media hawk who gives a shout out to Tsotsi, an obscure Cannes Film Festival favorite, when tweeting about Wolverine! It's things like that make him top dog on my list. My Only Question Is: Has Strombo Ever Done any "Fur Trapping" in His Green Room at The Hour? Let's get this speculation started: #StromboFur
My "Greatest Hits" List of Tweets from Strombo:

unmarketing / Scott Stratten Stop Marketing, Start Engaging. Speaker/Jedi of viral marketing. Made 60 online movies with over 60 mill views. Bouncer of Twitter
24,323 followers · from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
I admit it. I get giddy when I "favorite" Scott Stratten's tweets. And I've hovered and clicked to save a piece of Scott about a dozen times since I started experimental tweeting in early '08. Stratten is the President of Un-Marketing.com. He is an expert in Viral, Social, and Authentic Marketing which he calls Un-Marketing. His online viral movies have been seen over 60 million times and has generated massive profits and lists for himself and his clients. He was named one of the "Most Influential People on Twitter"and recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Mashable.com, USA Today, CNN.com and Fast Company. Is it just me or does Stratten kind of look like the Oxygen Network's answer to Russell Crowe in Gladiator, you know, in the off-hours - in between pillaging villages and making time with the ladies. My Only Question Is: What's catching Scott's eye in his profile pic? Let's get this Twitter speculation started: #StrattenEye
My Favorite Dispatches from Stratten:

Let it be known that when The National Post's feral Shinan Govani met the frisky Twitter, the art of capture in the dossier of celebrity sightings took a historic turn. The 140 frequency wave of the plucky blind item found it's new best friend. Twitter was made for savant personalities like Govani. And make no mistake, Govani was made for this moment in micro-blogging. His is the juiciest, most thought-provoking feed to be found. He is such a rabidly hungry mind; a calisthentic thinker. A Rousing Question: Who will be Named on the Dedication Page of Govani's new novel, Bold Face Names? The publisher, Harper Collins, is not yet naming names. Doug Coupland Never left art school

I remember flying to Vancouver in 2002 to strategically woo Douglas Coupland for a curatorial project. I ended up flying home with a feverishly, mad, aching crush on Michael Turner, novelist, The Pornographer's Poem. That's the way it tends to play out as you get closer to the Rockies. I have been an avid Coupland watcher for over a decade and enjoy his feed the way I enjoy my favorite comfort cereal. When Coupland surfaced on Twitter, I felt my TweetDeck was finally complete. Rick Mercer is one of Canada's sharpest comedians. Mercer came to national attention for his role in the satirical news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and his spin-off special Talking To Americans was the highest-rated comedy special in the history of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation with 2.7 million viewers. At first, I was wary of his feed, it stank of underpaid CBC intern pablum. Then it started to bear the signature of his acerbic wit. I think we'll keep watching. Twitter isn't a terribly Wainwrightian medium. This Canadian singer/songwriter is known for his lush, theatrical pop, tapping the antiquated traditions of Tin Pan Alley, cabaret, and opera. Old school, all the way. Regardless, his brand has jumped on the bandwagon and here's hoping they start having more fun with it. The feed is a wee Serena Ryder-ish, but points for coming out to play. The economic crisis has been simply fabulous for Ali Velshi's career. He is a key player in the growing tribe of what I like to call "recession celebrities," savvy and shrewd types who've positioned themselves with genius precision in the narrative arc of this historic story.
