WOMAN.ca's List of Top Tweet Queens to Follow Right Now
As Selected by Editorial Director Si Si Penaloza
Traditional news media is dead. News no longer breaks, it tweets. Twitterers tapped out tweets during the earthquake in China while the ground was still shaking. One of the first images of the airliner in the Hudson River, picked up by major newspapers, was tweeted by a 23-year-old with an iPhone. Twitter has become the top venue for citizen journalism". The critical bliss of Twitter is that it happens in real time. If you want to find out about something happening "right now", the place to go is Twitter. Not Google. This reversal is the first major global tech upset of the new century.
One thing I appreciate about Twitter is that one (or one's publicist or Twitter Ghostwriter) must be clever and quick to be followed. You can't be stunningly gorgeous but stupidly thick and be influential on Twitter. In this sense, this technology is a validating improvement over off-line life. This is one arena where smart girls rule, no contest. I was a little surprised not to find the usual "early adapter" suspects on Twitter. Where are Margaret Atwood and Naomi Klein? On that note, I'll be updating this list with new stats and additions, so stay tuned.

BTW, I listened to Serena on both inbound and outbound legs of my TTC ride this morning, to compensate for being snarky about her lousy Twitt-iquette (which is still crummy, IMHO).
...
Argh! I searched for Karen Walton and Twitter did NOT give me her Twitter handle.
She is a bonafide social genius and a woman I track editorially.
Thank you for getting her handle to me.

You rock. Now we know exactly who likes smart women. Michael O'Connor Clark is a GPS for finding smart chicks. Your radar is razor sharp too. I've checked out these women and will be doing a follow up list based on what your keen eye has brought forward.
My goal was to mix it up a bit, not list the usual suspects. I even tried to find for a great Canadian porn star that used Twitter as an avenue to comment on the industry. I searched far and wide for CBC talent, as I once worked at the nation's broadcaster. Nora Young is a great suggestion.
Many thanks for taking the time to nominate for the next round!
Warmest,

It's a really interesting list, Si Si. Hard to know what your criteria are here, and I figure it's mainly your own personal preferences - which is totally fine, of course.
I'd happily agree with many of your picks (esp. Amber, Bonnie, Rachel, Maggie & LaineyGossip - all excellent), but I'll confess I'm puzzled by some of the others. Serena Ryder, for example - as I tweeted yesterday: terrific talent, fantastic songs, and her voice makes my toes curl, but her use of Twitter is driving me nuts. I don't believe for a second it's Serena tweeting herself (at least, I hope it's not). It comes across like some label publicist, tweeting 3rd person on her behalf. Ack.
So are we looking for women who are influential within the context of Twitter, influential (in part) BECAUSE of their use of Twitter and other social media, or influential independently and they also just happen to be on Twitter?
As for some other nominations, here are a few I'd recommend checking out:
The fabulous Kate Trgovac @mynameiskate
CBC's Spark host, Nora Young @nora3000
Community-builders Erin Bury @erin_bury or Melanie Baker @melle
B5Media's Rachel Segal @rachelsegal
The inspiring April Dunford @aprildunford
Chief cheap eater Alexa Clark @alexaclark
Strategy queen Jen Evans @nejsnave
Donna (podcast princess) Papacosta @donnaPapacosta
The pneumatic and amazing Idee-smith Leila Boujnane @leilaboujnane
Spiky, complex and challenging Tamera Kramer @tamera
Flickr co-founder and now head of Hunch Caterina Fake @Caterina
And, if we're measuring influence by # of followers, the list would be incomplete without Tara ("Miss Rogue") Hunt: @missrogue
OK, I guess that's more than "a few". :-)

I do wish I'd had these women on my radar back in March as I was preparing this feature. I've got them on the list for the next piece we publish on WOMAN.ca.
Thank you both for your great comments and for sharing your Twitter intel.
