Awards Show To Air For The Funniest People On Screen
What the entertainment industry lacks in originality during a slow season of film and sitcom making, it more than compensates for in the allure and prestige of annual awards shows honoring star talent. Just when you think the glamour of the red carpet is unmatched, the next show stopping event makes bigger and better headlines. While it's fun to roast the celebrities in their outrageous outfits and make drinking games out of their speeches, we also love to see people receive proper recognition for a job well done. When the films we love are acknowledged, we feel proud almost like we were a part of them too.
Over the years many films and television shows have won awards for the 'best of' in various categories ranging from director to actor to costume designer. There are the Golden Globes, The Oscars, The Teen Choice Awards, The MTV Video Music Awards, Screen Actor's Guild, The Emmys, and more - the one genre overlooked for a ceremony and category of its own is comedy. That is, until now.
This week Comedy Central and MTV Networks announced that on March 26th, 2011 the first ever Comedy Awards show will take place at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom and will air on Sunday, April 10th on Comedy Central Spike, TV Land, VH1, and Nick-at-Nite. In addition to the traditional nomination categories seen in most awards ceremonies, "late night comedy series" and "stand-up special" are on the bill. Tina Fey's hit show "30 Rock" is already racking up points towards an award in best series, directing, writing, and all of the acting categories while NBC's "The Office" and "Modern Family" received four nominations each.
Fans of the comedy shows that don't get as much mainstream recognition will be happy to see that series like "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" and "Eastbound and Down" are in the running for best comedy series and best comedy actor. Also included are films like "Easy A" and "Kickass".
Finally a well deserved breakthrough for the superstars of comedy! For a complete list of nominees, check here.
