The Oscars Are Coming!

Why WOMAN.ca Loves The Oscars

alt

Hide yo kidz, hide yo wife... because the Academy Awards?

They're TONIGHT.

Yes, between four-to-seven blissful hours of celebrities being celebrated. Don’t worry if a few real actors slip in, the Academy does that for street cred. I kid, I kid.

I loves me some Oscars. It’s so weird and bizarrely pageant like. Yes, most of the major categories have locked in winners but there’s always a couple upsets and some genuinely quotable speeches. And there are always the dresses.

The fashions at the Oscars are almost as important as who walks out a winner. Who doesn’t love a tool like Ben Mulroney fawning desperately over couture gowns? And let’s not forget, everyone’s favourite fashion maverick Helena Bonham Carter is nominated for The King’s Speech and has already promised not to disappoint.

This year looks to be especially exciting. The breadth of films nominated is pretty astounding. From studio pictures like Inception and The Social Network to smaller films like Blue Valentine and Another Year - there’s something for everyone to root for.

This year in particular has strong showings from woman. Natalie Portman in her turn as a ballet dancer in the deliriously dark and beautiful Black Swan, and Annette Benning in The Kids Are Alright, and Hailee Steinfeld as the young upstart in True Grit - just to name a few.

There are a bunch of female nominees in the Best Picture and Best Screenplay categories this year. Not as much as the men but with Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Director win last year, we’re moving towards the equality that has long been demanded in the industry.

So grab some friends, ready the cheap champagne and gorge on junk food because this year, it’s on.

About the author:

After a five year stint in Montreal Alex moved back to her native Toronto to do her Masters and began writing for different publications. When in doubt she always asks, what would Nick Cave do? Luckily the answer almost always involves velvet, wine and writing. In her spare time she enjoys watching civil war reenactments, sharing her James Bond level charm and talking about that girl who did that thing that one time.
