MTV's 16 & Pregnant, which is now in its fourth season, has been a controversial show since its, ahem, conception. Proponents of the program say that it shows young women and men the realities of teen parenthood, while its detractors say that it rewards bad behavior and glamorizes unplanned pregnancy. Up until now, the debate has been mostly speculative - but now one of the show's young stars is saying that his babymama specifically plotted to get pregnant just so she could star on the show.
Jennifer Del Rio and her boyfriend, Josh Smith, starred in an episode of 16 & Pregnant that seemed pleasant for the most part, despite the fact that Jennifer's parents seemed to absolutely detest her beau, until the final 10 minutes - when Josh suddenly snapped, swore at Del Rio and drove off in his car with their infant twins in the backseat. The behavior seemed totally unexpected, but apparently drama is nothing new to the couple.
According to TMZ, Smith is now claiming that Del Rio is a "compulsive liar" who tricked him into thinking she was already pregnant so he wouldn't use a condom - hoping to conceive so she could land a spot on the program. He's also claiming that Del Rio attacked him, but she counters that he punched himself in the face to frame her and has asked for a restraining order against him. Smith and Del Rio are hardly the first couple in 16 & Pregnant history to showcase a history of domestic violence and outright animosity. If that's glamorizing teen pregnancy, well, we'd hate to see the reality.
