The population on Wisteria Lane is about to decrease by one.

According to TV Guide Magazine, Nicollette Sheridan, who plays blonde bombshell real-estate agent Edie Britt on Desperate Housewives, will be leaving the hit ABC show. As it's been penned: Edie finds out her husband, Dave, plans to kill herand Dave almost does kill her. She runs out of the house, but alas, poor Edie gets in an accident, something involving her car and an electrical wire.

Rumors of Nic's departure were confirmed last week when she made the announcement during the cast's table read. Kathryn Joosten, who plays Karen McCluskey, shared the blonde's farewell with E!: "Bye, it was really nice working with everybody. It's been terrific and a real honor."

Guess it's not so hard to say good-bye after all.

Then," said Joosten, "we all said, Bye,' and she said, I have a scene to go do, so let me go study that.' And that was that. Totally professional."

Never one of the core group of on-screen gal pals, Sheridan was reportedly not one of creator Marc Cherry's favorites. Plus, her diva demands might have had a hand in pushing her out the door.

But maybe it's just a cost-cutting measure. In these Serious Economic Times, it must cost the network a fortune in klieg lighting and those filters they use on Barbara Walters (you're not fooling anyone, ya know!). But whatever the real reason, the once red-hot nighttime drama could use an er . . . jolt to boost ratings on a so far underwhelming season.

Getting pink slipped will certainly leave Sheridan more time to canoodle with smirkmeister and maybe boyfriend David Spade. Talk about desperate . . .
