Throwing A Successful Stag & Doe
A stag and doe is like a joint bachelor and bachelorette party for a bride and groom before they get married, only it works as a way of raising money for the wedding. These events can either be a smashing success or a bomb depending on how much time and effort go into the planning stages.
That's where the bridal party comes in. The bridesmaids and groomsmen are responsible for hosting the stag and doe, usually a month or so before the big day. Sometimes one or two people are well versed enough in the tradition that they can take the reins and orchestrate everything flawlessly. Other times, no one knows what to do. The newlyweds-to-be deserve the best you can give them so if you're clueless, it's time to do a little homework and get the ball rollin'.
Here are some tips on how to throw a great stag and doe for your friends.
Hold monthly meetings - It's unlikely that an entire bridal party is in town at all times and available to meet in person on a frequent basis. Chances are, a bunch of strangers were thrown together and expected to host a series of parties over the coming months. Communicate through e-mail as much as possible and, when possible, plan to meet in person to smooth out details of the game plan. Members who are unable to attend can throw in their two cents online and be delegated to whatever tasks are needed as you go along.
Exclude bride and groom - The bride and groom should have very little to do with the actual planning process of the stag and doe - that includes invitations, selling tickets, booking venues, etc. While it's not exactly a surprise party, it's essentially a fundraiser for the wedding. To have the bride and groom running around town asking for money for their own wedding is awkward and kind of tacky. Assure them that the event is taken care of and in good hands. They shouldn't have to lift a finger until they arrive for the festivities.
Secure location - Book a hall to host the party, the sooner the better. Venues for events like these are taken fast so this should be the very first thing to consider. Ask around for recommendations.
Organize fun games - The whole point is to make as much money possible and in order to do that, you need this party to appeal to everyone. With that said, creative and fun games are what get the action going and the cash rolling in. Think drinking games! Carnival games as well, such as ring tosses, jelly bean counts, pie in the face, etc. Use your imagination.
Feature prizes - You need incentive to play the games if you're going to be charging admission as well as playing. It's possible that you may have to go out and buy some pretty stellar prizes but the costs can be split between the bridal party. Also, call various organizations, retail stores, and connections you may have for donations.
